North Devon Youth Cricket Association

The North Devon District Youth Cricket Association is responsible for two different aspects of youth cricket in the North Devon area; the North Devon Youth League and North Devon District Cricket. The North Devon Youth League arranges and manages all inter-club League cricket for Under 9, Under 10, Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 matches played during the cricket season. The North Devon District Association provides a pathway to youth County cricket and provides high quality training – out of season – to young people from all clubs. There are other similar associations in East, South and West Devon.

North Devon Youth Cricket League

North Devon has a thriving youth league which currently consists of 8 clubs; Barnstaple and Pilton C.C. , Bideford C.C., Braunton C.C., Hatherleigh C.C. , Chulmleigh C.C., Filleigh C.C., North Devon C.C., Newton Tracey C.C. League matches are currently plated at Under 9, Under 10, Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 age groups.

All these clubs are run by volunteers and offer wonderful opportunities for young people to play cricket. This is very rewarding but also very hard work for all volunteers, many of whom are trying to give something back to a game they love. All clubs are glad of any help they can get from willing helpers. Please encourage others to join your local club and, if possible offer help your local club so that they can continue to thrive and offer the possibility of a ‘sport for life’ to many youngsters.

North Devon District Cricket – how it works

Boys and girls from all the clubs are nominated for their respective age groups by their clubs. Assessments are held, usually in October or November. Squads are selected. The managers, try to select squads that are as large as possible to maximise opportunities but also of a size which optimises effective coaching. These sessions provide a great opening for youngsters to play with athletes from other clubs and it is here that bonds are formed which stretch far into the future when these young cricketers become highly proficient cricketers in the adult game.

Winter training sessions are run between January and March, after which a match squad is selected to play Inter-District Games. Those who are not selected for the match squads should not be too disappointed – they have had the benefit of some excellent coaching and will return to their clubs far stronger after the winter training.

The games played in late April/May allow cricketers from the North to evaluate the performance of players from outside their immediate, usual playing circle, and also give the best cricketers a chance to be spotted by Devon Managers and possibly move into County level cricket. The County Age Group Managers are generally a very hard working group of people committed to youth cricket. They select their summer squads AFTER the District games so the door is always open. Go for it!! It really is an honour to represent your County!!

A small number of volunteers spend hours organising this programme for the benefit of the children. Anyone who feels they can offer help in any capacity please get in touch. The NDYCA works very well with other similar associations in East, South and West Devon. All areas are run by volunteers who do their best to offer fantastic opportunities for youth cricket to be played in Devon. All these associations are supported by the Devon Youth Cricket Board.
